Educational Orientation and Criteria

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES OF HIGHCOPE PROGRAM
HighScope believes that preschool teachers are “Educators” who play a crucial role in guiding children’s brain development during the golden years of 0-6. By fostering creativity, confidence, and independence, the HighScope education program goes beyond merely providing knowledge—it prepares children for the next academic levels and lifelong success.
Readiness for Learning
Children become confident learners who do not shy away from challenges. They develop decision-making skills, a sense of responsibility, and a constant readiness to learn
Academic Foundation
Children gradually develop foundational knowledge and skills in various domains, including science, social studies, emotional intelligence, physical development, and primary school readiness. This is achieved through active and engaged interactions with people, materials, events, and ideas
Spirit of Independence
Children are naturally curious, capable of planning their own ideas, sharing thoughts, and collaborating with peers to carry out their play-based projects.
HOW DO TEACHERS ACHIEVE THIS?

A distinctive feature of the HighScope educational model is the Plan – Do – Review process, which allows children to make their own decisions and plan their activities. Teachers act as facilitators, supporting cognitive development through play, helping children acquire essential skills, and fostering all-round growth.

Educators in the HighScope preschool program are required to shift from a “Directive” (Instructive/Guiding) teaching style to a “Supportive” teaching approach, encouraging children to take an active role in their learning experiences.

Social-Emotional Development

Children learn and develop best when their emotions are acknowledged, and they feel connected to those around them. Teachers design large-group, small-group, and outdoor activities to observe children’s behaviors, awareness, and unique abilities. Based on these observations, teachers provide personalized support to enhance children’s social interactions.

A key aspect of HighScope’s social development approach is its six-step conflict resolution process, built on the belief that learning to manage emotions is essential for developing positive, win-win solutions in social interactions. This is the first step in teaching children how to regulate emotions and solve problems, crucial life skills for future generations.

Respecting Diversity

Family background and cultural heritage play a significant role in a child’s development. HighScope teachers are trained to respect individual differences, encourage children to express their unique personalities, and foster an environment where every child values the differences in others. The Active Learning approach focuses on each child’s strengths and abilities, enabling teachers to develop personalized support plans tailored to each individual’s learning needs.

Family Engagement

Building a strong, trusting relationship with families is key to the effectiveness of the HighScope education program. HighScope believes that parents are a child’s first teachers, and educators must establish a positive partnership with families to extend the impact of school learning into the home environment.
